Grateful Project

UPDATE: 29 March 2022
Eleven years?! Really? I can’t believe it has been so long since I did anything with this website or my Grateful 365 Project. Its presence (and neglect) has always been in the back of my mind and I have many times thought about refreshing (or just deleting) it. So here we are… eleven years since my last substantive update and I honestly don’t know where to begin again.

So, I’ll start with just “thinking out loud”…

I still love photography, but have not made it my priority in the last several years. A lot of it is due to the reality of doing the type of photography that I just don’t enjoy as much – the kind with deadlines and expectations imposed (and rightfully so) by other people.

In recent years I have forgotten that I enjoy photography because of what it does for me. It helps me to see the world differently and be grateful for the nuances of the creation around us – nuances left as clues by the Creator that points back to Him and His divine authorship. It is for this reason I started the Grateful Project in the first place and it is time I returned to it.

While I close this update, I can’t help but think no one will take the time to read this. I question if I would read it had I come across it on another site. In truth, it doesn’t really matter because I’m not doing this for the page views – I’m doing this for me.

Thank you for reading – and if you know me, reach out and say “hi.”

UPDATE: 30 June 2011
When I started this project I knew it would be challenging to get a photo everyday that was worth posting. It has proven to be more difficult than I originally expected and those that have had to sacrifice to allow me the time to get it done have been my family and no one more than Sue. So… I will continue to post photos as often as I can and will continue counting where I left off. By the time I am done with this project, I will have posted 365 Grateful photos in a little more than a year.

Ever since I bought my first DSLR in 2010 I’ve been considering doing a 365 Project in which I make and upload at least one photo a day. Up until today (9 May 2011) I have not begun the project for a number of reasons including the time commitment required and a fear that I would not be able to come up with a good subject every day. Thanks to a post from Digital Photography School I have finally decided to take the plunge and make the commitment. The DPS post talks about a project someone started called 365 Grateful in which they began posting a picture of something for which they are grateful each day.  Their idea caught on and soon captured the attention of photographers around the world.

I am excited to start this project (and see it through) because I believe I have much for which to be grateful that I probably don’t really notice each day.  There’s also the benefit of improving my photography and editing skills.  With this in mind, here are the parameters under which I will operate for this project:

  • capture at least one image each day
  • spend 15 minutes or less in the editing / uploading / posting
  • NO CROPPING!
  • explain why I am grateful for the subject of the photo.

I’ve had a couple people ask me why I am spending so little time in post and won’t do any cropping – the simple answer is that I want the images to stand on their own as much as possible. There will be days, I am sure, when the photos won’t be great but overall I know I will look back on this year and be more grateful for each day God has given me.

Sounds easy, right?
