Today we took the whole family out for an opportunity to make a photograph of the snow-capped Beartooth Mountains outside of Columbus. Our trip began with an early morning departure (5:30AM) in order to get to the right spot when the light was at its best for the photo. However, the weather was simply uncooperative and we ended up taking a leisurely drive through Columbus, Absarokee, and Red Lodge before finally arriving back in Billings. We kept our eyes open for photo ops so when we came around a bend and saw this barn nestled amongst the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains we stopped and I made this photo. It is what’s called a “High Dynamic Range” or HDR for short and is made up of three photos and different exposures – one at standard exposure, one at -1 exposure and another at +1 exposure. The photos are then blended together using a program called Photomatix Pro and after a bit of tweaking this is what I ended up with…
